The 102 million short message service texts in the 24 hours after midnight on December 31 represents a 59 percent increase on one year before, offering a further indication of how pervasive text messaging has become in Britain.
"The large amount of text messages sent at New Year confirms that most people see text messaging as a warm and personal way to greet their friends and loved ones on special occasions," Mike Short, chairman of the Mobile Data Association said on Tuesday.
The MDA collects the text message data from the country's four wireless operators, Vodafone, mmO2, Orange and T-Mobile.
