Single mail delivery 'no concern to clients'

Mailing houses say their clients are so far unconcerned by Royal Mail's plans for a single postal delivery.

Royal Mail, which is losing £1.2m every day, says the change would enable it to make annual savings of £350m. It has just completed single delivery pilot schemes, with plans to introduce single deliveries nationally in 2003.

Second deliveries account for four per cent of the mail delivered. "Royal Mail deliver as much as they can (regardless of class) in the first post, and the second delivery is for 'sweep up' items that come in late, or badly addressed, so need a little more time to determine the delivery address," said Lorraine Turner, managing director of CCS Direct Mail.

Graham Cooper, divisional director of Mail Marketing International, said a single daily delivery "is probably going to be acceptable to most mailers".

Of more concern, say mailing houses, is the time of day the mail is delivered. Cooper believes a review of delivery times is needed. "If mail is delivered later in day, this might pick the late items," he said.

Turner said some CCS Direct Mail clients would prefer an earlier single delivery. "Some, especially in the financial sector, have the view that mail gets read over the breakfast table and better responses are received then," she said.
